| The traditional treatment for fractures and other injuries or therapy after operations lead to the long-term immobilization - traditionally in a plaster cast. Not only is it uncomfortable for the patient, but it also carries the danger of functional loss as a result of muscle atrophy and permanent stiffening of joints as a result of capsular withering and cartilage degeneration. It is much more easy to prevent joint stiffness than it is to overcome it once it has occurred. One must remember that all static splints must be taken off at intervals and | exercises have to be performed. The idea that more "dynamic" methods of treatment are preferable has gained more and more credibility. Dynamic splinting provides constant force over a long period of time. Active motion can be encouraged. The pumping effect of muscle contraction helps relieve edema and increases joint range of motion. For the different kinds of injuries one can choose between static or dynamic splinting. The basic principle is: PERSONALIZE YOUR SPLINT. |
